The Magic of Meditation with Sister Jayanti at Old Trafford, Manchester – Saturday 14 June.

Total attendance 200
Estimated new audience: 40

Organised by Inner Space Manchester, the Hospitality Suite at Old Trafford was filled with spiritual energy as 200 people gathered for an enlightening evening on The Magic of Meditation. Among the special guests was Mrs Vishakha Yaduvanshi, Consul General of India in Greater Manchester.

MC David Goodman opened the evening by describing meditation as “putting the mind into a position where your thoughts are creating good feelings.” He then introduced Allan Schweitz, who interviewed Sister Jayanti. Allan, an IT consultant, shared how meditation helped him cope with the high paced life he leads.

Asked about the “magic” of meditation, Sister Jayanti explained, “The real magic is that through meditation, we are able to master our minds—our thoughts and feelings. It allows us to change deeply embedded patterns of behaviour.” Sharing from personal experience, she shared how she used to be too shy to speak publicly, but meditation helped me drop fear and connect with people as a soul seeing the soul.

Sister Jayanti spoke about the relevance of meditation in today’s world, saying, “The power of peace we generate together is the energy that can heal the current sadness in the world.”

She invited the audience to reflect on the inner identity, saying, “We are so caught up with our physical identity that we forget the soul. The soul is who we truly are—our thoughts, beliefs, conscience, values, and personality.”

Leading the audience into meditation, Sister Jayanti encouraged them to keep their eyes open, teaching that meditation is not separate from daily life but rather a higher consciousness we maintain in every moment. “We don’t stop our thoughts,” she said, “but we change the direction of our thoughts. Peace is not passive – it is powerful and transformative.”

She then emphasised the second step of Raja Yoga meditation: connection with the Divine. “Yoga means union. Raja Yoga is union with the One – the Supreme. When you keep your thoughts on the qualities of the Supreme, you form a relationship. It becomes a natural conversation with the Divine.”

Explaining this relationship, she said, “In the West we speak of God as the Creator or Father. In India, we speak of the Divine as Mother, Father, Teacher, Friend, and Guide. Whatever loving or supportive relationship you lack or need, you can find it in the Divine.”

On how meditation can help us address the challenges of modern life, she quoted the President of Iceland at the recent Spirit of Humanity Forum in Iceland: “All the problems we face today have been created by humans—and we’ve tried to solve them from the outside. But now, we must solve them from the inside.”

She spoke about the loss of contact with core values—peace, love, truth, happiness, and purity – and said, *”These are already within us. Meditation helps us reconnect with them and express our goodness once more.”

On concentration, she encouraged gentle, loving practice: “It’s not about force. It’s about being interested. You begin with a gentle, loving conversation with the Divine. Concentration develops naturally through interest and practice.”

Practical tips included using hourly reminders to pause and turn inward, and she recommended the Brahma Kumaris’ just-a-minute website for guided meditations. Allan confirmed that the hourly one-minute breaks at his workplace “really work”.

The evening ended with a powerful meditation: “The power of truth awakens my desire for truth and dissolves falsehood. I visualise a world of peace, a world of love, a world of light…”

Asked for their key takeaway from the evening, a young woman shared:  “Pause for a minute and reflect and go inside yourself and calm yourself down and then continue your day to day life.” For a young man it was: “It’s very easy to get lost in our own lives, in our own thoughts, our own stories and it is so important to reconnect with soul consciousness or however you want to call it. The more often you can do that, the happier your life will be.”
